Red meat sale begins Sunday as strike ends

Dhaka: Dhaka city’s meat traders will resume selling red meat on Sunday as their six-day strike, seeking implementation of their four demands, including cancellation of the present lease of Gabtoli Cattle Market, ended on Saturday.

Bangladesh Meat Sellers Association (BMSA) and Dhaka Metropolitan Meat Sellers’ Association enforced the strike in the capital on Monday to press for their demands.

Their other demands include relocation of tanneries from the city’s Hazaribagh area to Savar, providing permission for the import of cattle from neighbouring countries and withdrawal the DNCC chief executive officer and chief estate officer.

Contacted, BMSA secretary general Robiul Alam said they will hold a meeting with the Commerce Ministry at 11 am on Sunday and then with Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) around 2:00 pm to discuss their demands.

“Our next course of action depends on the outcomes of the two meetings.  We’ll announce the meetings’ outcomes later at 5:00pm at a press briefing at our Gabtoli office,” Rabiul said.

The BMSA secretary, however, feared that there might be attacks on them by members of ‘Kala Moija Bahini’, a syndicate of money launderers at the Gabtoli Cattle Market.  “We’ve requested the DNCC to deploy its one officer at the cattle market on Sunday to monitor the overall situation,” he said.

Replying to a question, the BMSA secretary general warned that their association will call a countrywide indefinite strike in case of any attack on them.
