Dhaka: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the attitude of the Election Commission (EC) and the government will determine whether they will be there in the election race or opt out.

‘Whether we’ll remain there in the election depends on the attitude of the Election Commission’s and the election-time government,’ he said, reports the UNB.

The BNP leader came up with the comment while talking to reporters after nearly a two-hour meeting between Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikyafront delegation and the Election Commission at Nirbachan Bhaban.

Replying to a question, the BNP leader said the EC and the government has so far failed to demonstrate a positive attitude for ensuring a credible election.

Asked what the EC told them about their election deferment demand, Fakhrul said they demanded the election be delayed by three weeks. ‘The Commission said they will discuss it at their meeting and inform their decision later.’

Dr Kamal Hossain said the Commission has assured them of ensuring a free, fair and credible election. ‘I hope they’ll live up to their commitment.’

The meeting that began around 3:30 pm continued till 5:30pm.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and other Commissioners are presents at the meeting being held at Nirbachan Bhaban.
