Dhaka: Apparently lending its support to some senior citizens’ move to resolve the ongoing political crisis, BNP on Sunday said it is ready to welcome any initiative for forging a national consensus and holding talks aiming to arrange an inclusive election.

In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed said, ‘The people of all strata of society are now united to fulfill the national desire for putting the country on a solid foundation and globally recognised democratic state institutions.’

He further said, “We welcome any initiative for a national consensus, national dialogue and formation of a national charter in a bid to hold participatory and acceptable polls under a non-party government.”

On February 13, 'Concerned Citizens', a newly-floated platform of professionals, formed a 13-member committee, headed by former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, for initiating a national dialogue among political parties to resolve the country's ongoing political crisis.

The platform urged the political parties to create an environment for dialogue putting an end to the ongoing violence across the country.

The BNP leader claimed that it is now a time-befitting demand for forming a national charter or rewriting the constitution based on the Liberation War’s main spirit -- equality, human dignity and social justice -- to finally materialise people’s hopes and expectations.

He said the current opportunity for bringing massive social changes at national level must be made successful in the interest of people as the entire nation is committed to building a true democratic society enduring all the pains.
