Narayanganj: Workers in Narayanganj kept the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway blocked for more than an hour, set fire to several vehicles and clashed with police over the death of two garment workers on Saturday morning.

Police used rubber bullets and charged batons on the blockaders to free the country’s one of the most important highway.

At least 10 persons got shot during the police operation. Blockaders, however, withdrew after one and half an hour.

Sonargaon police officer-in-charge Kamrul Islam said a bus at Mugrapara of Sonargaon in Narayanganj on about 8:00am ran over and killed two Chaiti Garment workers. Identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately.

The death triggered rage among the co-workers who took to the road and set the Swadesh Paribahan Bus on fire. Driver and his assistant ran away from the scene.

Workers also set fire to the motorcycle of a television cameraperson.

Later at about 9:30am, police shot bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse the workers.
