Annisul wins the race
Dhaka: Awami League-backed contestant Annisul Huq was unofficially declared elected mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) as he defeated his main rival pro-BNP mayoral contender Tabith Awal with a big margin in Tuesday’s polls.
Returning officer M Shah Alam announced the results at Bangabandhu International conference centre.
Annisul bagged 4, 60,117 votes while Tabith got 3, 25, 080 votes, according to results came from all the 1093 centers.
Tabith, however, boycotted the election bringing allegations of huge vote rigging.
‘I had tried my best to be there in the election till the end. Calling it an election is not the right word, anyway,’ while addressing a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters around Tuesday noon.
Tabith alleged that it has become clear that the government and the Election Commission have no intention to hold fair polls.
‘It’s my question to them as to why they made such a mockery in the name of polls. After evaluating the overall situation, I’ve decided to boycott the polls,’ a dejected Tabith told the press conference.
Later, Tabith Awal demanded the Election Commission hold a fresh election to the Dhaka North City Corporation.
Tabith made the demand in a letter sent to the EC on Tuesday evening.
