Kushtia: A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his associates and police at Katlamari filed on the Kushtia-Meherpur road in Mirpur upazila, Kushtia, in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased is Nazmul Islam Sagar, in his twenties, a resident of Khalishakundi village in Doulatpur upazila.

The Mirpur police said a team of police conducted a drive while a gang of 10-12 robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery on the Kushtia-Meherpur road by placing logs at about 2:15am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to police prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

Sagar sustained bullet injuries as he was caught in the line of fire that continued for half an hour.

Later police recovered Sagar and sent him to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Police sent the body to Kushtia GeneralHospital morgue for autopsy.

Two police constables—Rezaul and Hasan—were injured during the gunfight.

Police also recovered a shutter gun, three bullets, a machine for cutting tree and two sharp weapons from the spot.

Police claimed Sagar was wanted in several cases, including Jasad leader Panger murder case.
