Nasir takes over as CCC mayor
Chittagong: Newly elected Chittagong City mayor AJM Nasir Uddin took over charge on Sunday.
As outgoing mayor Manjur Alam’s term expired on 25 July, city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin took over officially at about 12:00pm from acting mayor Mohammad Hossain at KB Abdus Sattar Conference Room in the city corporation building.
Chittagong City Awami League adviser Ishaque Mia was present on the occasion.
However, four former city mayors - Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, Mir Mohamamd Nasir Uddin, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and M Manjurul Alam- were not present at the programme although all of them were invited.
Earlier, Awami League-blessed candidate AJM Nasir Uddin was elected mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) defeating his nearest rival pro-BNP mayoral contender Manjur Alam with a huge margin on 28 April.
Manjur Alam, however, boycotted the election halfway through bringing allegations of huge vote rigging.
On 6 May, AJM Nasir sworn-in as mayor but he could not took over as the term of the outgoing mayor did not end at that time. Manjur Alam’s tenure expired on 25 July last.
On 30 April, the Election Commission officially declared Annisul Huq, Sayeed Khokon and AJM Nasir elected mayors of DNCC, DSCC and CCC respectively through publishing gazettes.
The elections to the three city corporations in capital Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong were held on 28 April.
