Gazipur: A half-day hartal enforced by Kaliakoir upazila unit of Awami League protesting the killing of Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, former president of the upazila unit of Jubo League, is underway peacefully in the upazila on Sunday.

The shutdown that began at about 6:00am will end at 12:00pm.

Vehicular movement on the streets remained suspended and shops closed for the shutdown.

No long route bus left the upazila.

Publicity secretary of the upazila unit of Awami League Mohammad Tofazzol Hossain Rana on Saturday called for a half- day hartal from a demonstration in the upazila from 6:00am to 12:00pm on Sunday protesting the murder.

Earlier on Friday, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam was killed in a factional clash of Awami League during a programme at Chandra in Kaliakoir upazila marking the National Mourning Day and 21 August

grenade attack anniversary.

Police also arrested two people on Friday night for their suspected involvement in the murder.
