Witness deposition in Rajon murder case begins

Sylhet: The witness deposition in the Rajon murder case has been started at Sylhet metropolitan sessions judge’s court on Thursday morning. 

The sessions court judge Akbar Hossain Mridha at about 10:00am began recording the statements of Rajon’s mother Lubna Begum, his father Sheikh Azizul Haque, and suspended Jalalabad police sub-inspector Aminul Islam, who is also the plaintiff of first case filed in this killing.

Advocate Emdad Ullah Shahin is present during the deposition on behalf of plaintiff while the prosecution lawyers are Advocate Mafur Ali and Ishtiaque Ahmed Chowdhury.

The 10 accused, now in prison, will also appear before the court during the statement recording session.

The accused are Muhid Alam, Ali Haider, Taj Uddin Ahmed Badal, Moyna Chaukidar,Ruhul Amin, Dulal Ahmed,Nur Mia, Firoz Mia, Asmat Ullah, and Ayaz Ali.

Earlier, on 22 September the court framed charges against 13 accused after concluding a hearing. Later on that day court fixed 1, 4,7,8,11,12, 13, and 14 October for the witness deposition.

On 7 September, the case was transferred to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court 1.

Meanwhile, on 31 August, Judge Shahedul Karim passed an order asking the authorities concerned to publish advertisements in daily newspapers showing the three accused as fugitives.

On 8 July, 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, son of Sheikh Azizur Rahman of Badeali village in Sadar upazila, was brutally tortured to death over a theft at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon area of the city.

The killers themselves took the video footage of the incident, which went viral on social networking site Facebook and video-sharing site Youtube which triggered a widespread outcry.

Ten people have been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder and eight of them made their ‘confessional’ statements separately to their involvement in the incident of Rajon murder. 

Among the fugitive accused, Quamrul Islam, brother of main accused Muhit Alam, fled to Saudi Arabia after the incident where he was held by local Bangladeshis and then handed over to Jeddah police.
