Juba League leader held over ‘robbery’

Sylhet: Police arrested a local Juba League leader from Companyganj upazila headquarters in Sylhet on Friday afternoon in connection with a robbery case.
The arrestee is Shah Alam, joint convener of the upazila unit of Juba League, the youth wing of the ruling Awami League.
Companyganj police officer-in-charge Delwar Hossain said a gang of robbers stormed into the houses of Azir Uddin and Jamal Uddin in Doyar Bazar area of the upazila on 3 October last year.
They looted Tk 17 lakh in cash and 12 tolas of gold ornaments from Azir’s house and Tk 11 lakh from Jamal’s one after holding the house inmates hostage at gunpoint.
Later, police arrested several robbers when they disclosed the name of Shah Alam as their accomplice.
Police arrested the Juba League leader following their confessional statement.
After the arrest, he was taken to the office of the Detective Branch of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
