Gaibandha: A Gaibandha court on Thursday sent Manjurul Islam Liton, Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha 1 constituency, to jail rejecting bail and custody pleas in a case for shooting a minor boy in Sundarganj upazila.

Additional chief judicial magistrate Moynul Hasan Yousuf passed the order after hearing.

Manjurul Islam Liton was produced before the court at about 11:30pm from the office of police super.

Israil Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station, sought 5-day for quizzing Liton.

Meanwhile, supporters of Liton locked in a clash with the law enforcers when Liton was being taken to the court.

Liton who was arrested in Dhaka on Wednesday night was taken to Gaibandha in the morning.

Amid tight security, a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police took him to police super’s office in the district at about 6:00am.

Detectives arrested Manjurul Islam Liton in the city’s Uttara area on Wednesday night.

The arrest came hours after the Supreme Court (SC) stayed a High Court order that directed the ruling party MP to surrender before a lower court by 18 October in a case for shooting the minor boy.

The SC passed the order on Wednesday following a petition filed by the state on Tuesday seeking a stay on the HC order.

On Monday, the HC rejected the bail petition filed by Liton and asked him to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Gaibandha by 18 October.

Earlier on Sunday, the Gaibandha-1 constituency lawmaker filed the petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

On 2 October, minor boy Sourav, 8, son of Sazu Miah of Gopalcharan village, suffered wounds to his both legs with bullets allegedly fired by Manjurul Islam Liton at the village in Sundarganj upazila.

Sazu filed an attempted murder case against Liton the following day.

Liton remained ‘on the run’ since the incident.

On 8 October, another case was filed against him on charge of vandalism and looting.
