Municipal polls: 4 injured as canvassers clash
Jamalpur: Two persons got bullet wounds and several injured during a clash between teams of two mayoral candidates while canvassing for votes at Sarishabari in Jamalpur on Monday afternoon.
The clash erupted at Aramnagar Bazar area in Sarishabari municipality. Bullet-hit upazila Chhatra Dal joint secretary Shafiqul Islam and BNP activist Pazim were admitted into a local hospital. The injured others are Shahid and Shahin.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Yunus Mia said they had tackled the situation and deployed more policemen to avert any untoward situation.
Police said supporters of independent candidate Ruhul Amin Selim canvassing for vote in the municipal elections.
They, however, were deterred by the supporters of BNP candidate Faizul Kabir Talukder Shahin. BNP activists complained that the activists of the independent candidate were giving money to voters to buy their votes.
An altercation erupted centering the issue and at one point canvassers of the independent candidate swooped on the BNP activists.
Two groups chased each other, pelted the opposition with stones and shot fires.
Faizul Kabir complained that Awami League activists led the attack on his canvassers.
