Gaibandha: Three persons were buried to death as a broken bridge collapsed on them at Jainpur-Manduar village at Sadullapur in Gaibandha at about 7:30pm on Monday, said police.

Sadullapur police officer-in-charge Farhad Imrul Kayes said three more were injured while the brick-build bridge collapsed on them.

The village people went to debris of an old bridge, which was declared abandoned months ago as a newer one is under construction, to collect bricks from the broken parts.

Referring villagers, the police officer said 12 to 15 persons were collecting bricks. A search is underway as they were not confirmed about how many persons were really caved in inside the pit, which was dug by the villagers to collect bricks from the underground part of the bridge.

The dead are Abdus Sattar, in his fifties; Kakoli, in her thirties; and Kuddus, in his thirties.

Injured Arfi Mia, Selina Begum and Minara Begum are undergoing treatment at Sadullapur Upazila Health Complex.
