Govt mulls massive expansion of electronic money transfer service
Dhaka: Post and Telecommunications State Minister Begum Tarana Halim on Tuesday told parliament that the government would expand Electronic Money Transfer Service (EMTS) to more 5,000 post offices across the country by March this year.
‘The government has undertaken various initiatives to increase revenue of the postal department,’ she said, while replying to a question from treasury bench member Waresat Hossain Belal in the House.
The state minister said presently 3,500 post offices are providing EMTS.
She informed the parliament that some 2,188 post offices are providing postal cash card services and 6,500 post offices would be brought under the service by this year.
Meanwhile, the postal department has launched eight Automated Teller Machine (ATM) booths and 13 more ATM booths would be installed by 2016, Tarana added.
She said that the government would also start the automated teller machine service in phases.
