Dhaka: Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday said a friendly relation between owners and workers is now prevailing in Bangladesh as the government has ensured workers’ right in the country’s readymade garment industry.

‘The relation between workers and owners is very good now. Factories are experiencing peaceful productions,’ he said describing government initiatives taken so far to ensure workers’ rights.

The Commerce Minister made the remark when a delegation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) met him at his Secretariat office, said a ministry handout.

Kenyan Minister Counsellor (Labour) to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations Elizabeth Faith Onuko led the five-member delegation.

Highlighting safety and improved environment at the RMG sector, Tofail said no major incident took place after the Rana Plaza tragedy. ‘Now green industries are being set up in the country.’

He mentioned that the government has amended the Labour Law to establish workers’ rights.

Tofail also said the government has taken initiatives to set up 100 special economic zones with all required facilities for investors.

Senior Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon and Additional Secretary M Shawkat Hossain Waresi and senior officials of the ministry were present.
