AL chairman candidates bag 379, BNP 59
Dhaka: Awami League-nominated chairman candidates won in 379 union councils (UCs) while Bangladesh Nationalist Party-supported contesters came out victorious in 59 unions in the third phase UC polls held on 23 April 2016.
According to reports reaching the NTV Online news desk, the third phase results in 584 UCs were published. A total of 379 AL candidates, 59 BNP candidates, 15 Jatiya Party, 00 Jasod, 130 independent and 1 other candidates were elected.
Election to 611 UCs in 48 districts was held on Saturday amid various alleged irregularities and sporadic violence that left one person dead.
The voting was marked with violence and anomalies in Pabna, Narayanganj, Thakurgaon, Chandpur, Brahmanbaria, Jamalpur, Laxmipur and Noakhali districts.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission on Saturday postponed balloting in 24 polling stations across 48 districts following several irregularities, including capture of polling stations and stuffing ballot boxes.
