Man killed in Jessore ‘shootout’
Jessore: A man was killed during a firing between drug dealers and police at Sadar upazila in Jessore in the early hours of Friday, claimed police.
Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. However, local people said the deceased is Taleb, a drug trader of Barandipara area in Jessore town.
It has been known that Taleb had spent a year in prison for trading prohibited drugs. He was wanted in several drug cases.
The Jessore Kotwali police Officer-in-charge Mohammad Ilias Hossain said being informed that two groups of drug dealers were engaged in a gun battle at Noyapara area of downtown at midnight, police went to the spot at about 1:00am.
Police opened blank fire to drive away the drug dealers and to take the situation in control.
Later, the drug dealers flee away and police found a bullet-hit man on the spot. Later, they took him to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Kotwali police Second-officer Sub-inspector Rakibuzzaman said they also recovered a pipegun, and two bullets from the spot.
Jessore General Hospital Emergency unit physician Yusuf Ali said Kotwali police brought a bullet-hit man to the hospital at about 2:10am.
After medical examination, doctors found that the man died before he brought to the hospital.
Dr Yusuf said the body has bullet marks near its left eye.
