News portal's Facebook page ‘stolen’
Dhaka: Social networking giant Facebook authorities on September 16 reportedly deleted the original Facebook page of a news-based website in Bangladesh named 24livenewspaper.com and verified a fake Facebook page by the name of the website.
24livenewspaper.com commenced its journey in 2011 and launched its FB fan page by uniform resource locator (URL), www.facebook.com/24livenewspaper, following the year of its inception.
The original FB page dribbled past over 3.9 million ‘like’ mark over years before the snatching of the page and the huge number of ‘like’ have been transferred to the new fake page after verification.
But the original FB page was found closed on September 16 (Friday).
It was known that some people opened a FB page by the same name and made it verified. The FB authorities also transferred the 3.9 million fans into the new one after verification.
At the outset, the duplicate FB page started to use the original page’s profile picture, cover photo, and website link. The URL of the fake FB page has been changed for two times. The first URL was www.facebook.com/newsbd241 and the current one is www.facebook.com/bangladesh24live.
Till now, the fake verified FB page added at least four website addresses as their portal but it was not possible to access any of them.
The fake verified FB page has not added any local or international address and any contact numbers. So, it was not possible to contact with it.
The original page 24livenewspaper.com’s chief executive officer Jamal Uddin told NTV Online they didn’t find their company’s FB page on Friday and came to know about the fake page after searching in the social networking site.
Jamal Uddin said their FB page had over 3.9 million fans according to their last collected screenshot and all of them were transferred to the fake one. He termed it as ‘digital heist’.
Jamal Uddin on Saturday filed a general diary with Dhanmondi Model Police Station in Dhaka. The GD number is 653. He said they will also lodge a case under ICT act over the incident.
