One sentenced to death, 4 get life term for murder in Bagerhat

Bagerhat: A court on Monday sentenced a man to death and four other people to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Sadar upazila in 2011.
The condemned convict is Sohel Sheikh, 27, son of Amir Sheikh of Sankidanga village in Morelganj upazila of the district while the four lifers are Al-Amin alias Tuhin of Tutpara of Khulna city, Sohag alias Jahid of Rupsha upazila in Khulna district and Jasim of Shreerampur village in the same upazila, and Monir Sheikh of Gaogram village in Batiaghata upazila of Khulna.
The court also fined the four lifers, who are on the run, TK 20,000, in default, to suffer two years more jails.
According to the prosecution, the five accused intercepted motorcyclist Gourango Debnath on Bagerhat-Khulna road in Bagerhat sadar upazila on the night of June 29 in 2011 and snatched his motorbike after chopping him with sharp weapons.
When local people chased the snatchers Sohel Sheikh entered the house of Shahin Sheikh near Paikpara village to escape.
As house owner Shahin started screaming after seeing him Sohag chopped Sahin to death in the house. Local people caught Sohag red hand and handed him over to police.
Later, Debnath filed a case against five people with Bagerhat Model Police Station.
After examining witnesses and documents, Judge of Bagerhat Additional Session Judge’s court-1 M Zakir Hossain handed down the verdict.
