3 sentenced to death for killing college student in Pirojpur

Pirojpur: A Pirojpur court on Thursday sentenced three people to death and three others to life term imprisonment for killing a college student in Mathbaria upazila in 2008.
The condemned convicted are-Miraj, 20, Abdul Jalil, 22 and Abul Kalam, 23 while the four lifers are-Jahidul Islam, Abdul Mannan, Farukh Khan and Riyaj Khan. Among them, Miraj was tried in absentia.
The court also fined the condemned convicted TK 20,000 each while the lifers TK 10,000 each.
According to prosecution, Rubel, 20, son of Md Habibur Rahman Akand of Uttar Mithakhali village of the upazila and a student of Mathbaria college, was slaughtered at the village over previous enmity on June 22 in 2008. The body was dumped in a canal at the village.
On June 23, police recovered the floating body from the canal.
Police arrested the five after victim’s father filed a murder case with Mathbaria Police Station against them.
Later, Abdul Jalil and Abul Kamal made confessional statement before the court.
After examining all the records, additional district and session judge S M Zillur Rahman handed down the verdict.
