Dhaka: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday asked the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to ensure the prompt trial of Sylhet college student Khadiza Akter’s attacker.

Visiting Khadiza at city’s Square Hospital, the minister phoned the police commissioner and deputy commissioner of Sylhet directing them to take quick action against the perpetrator of the heinous attack.

On Monday Khadiza, 23, a student of Sylhet Govt Women’s College, was stabbed allegedly by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit BCL leader Badrul Alam on her way back home from college following the refusal of his proposal for having an affair with him.

Hearing the victim’s screams, locals rescued Khadiza and caught Badrul from the spot and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing. Khadiza was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was moved to Dhaka at about 12:10am on Tuesday as her condition deteriorated.

Nahid also talked to Khadiza’s uncle Abdul Quddus and her other relatives and assured them of stern legal action against Badrul.

He strongly denounced the terror attack on the student and said exemplary punishment must be ensured to the perpetrator so that no one dare repeat such an incident.

The minister inquired about Khadiza’s health condition from physicians and requested them to ensure the best treatment for her.
