‘Robber’ hurt in ‘gunfight’ in Joypurhat

Joypurhat: An alleged robber was injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Vikni Bridge on Akkelpur-Bogra road in Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat early on Wednesday.

The injured is Dilbar, in his thirties, a resident of Susrishti Adarsho Guchchhagram village of the upazila.

Akkelpur Police Officer-in-charge Sirajul Islam said tipped off that Dilbar and his associates were taking preparation for a robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there at about 2:00am.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robber gang opened fire at them, prompting them to fire back, triggering a gunfight.

Dilbar was caught in the line of fire and injured while other members of his gang managed to escape.

Police arrested him from the spot.

He was taken to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital.

Police also recovered some locally made arms from the spot.

Dilbar was accused in 12 cases, including those for muder, robbery, snatching and arson attack, the OC added.
