AL councillors want new leadership to listen grassroots voices
Dhaka: Councillors and delegates of the ruling Awami League who attended the party’s 20th council on Saturday said they expect such a leadership that will listen to the problems of the grassroots.
While talking to news agency United News of Bangladesh at the council venue, they said they will accept the decision of party president Sheikh Hasina in this regard as she knows everything of the party.
Abul Mansur Chowdhury, AL Cox's Bazar unit member, said, “We hope the new leadership would work to serve the interests of the organisation as well as the grassroots activists. I expect that they’ll pay heed to the demands and complaints of the party’s lower order.”
About the general secretary post, he said, “We’ll accept the choice of our leader (Hasina), She knows better than us about it. I think she’ll pick such a man who will be able to work for the party and its leaders and activists.”
Zafar Alam Chowdhury, a councillor, said such people should be inducted in the new committee who will work for the party and the country.
Farid Akhter, a delegate from Cox’sbazar, said, “I hope the new committee will listen to the problems of the grassroots and solve those accordingly. I expect they won’t indulge in corruption.”
Manzur Ahmed, a councillor and chairman of Matlab upazila of Chandpur districtl said the new committee, through its activities, will have to revitalise the grassroots as the next election will be held under the leadership of this committee.
Billah Hossain Sujon, a delegate from Dhaka’s Tejgaon area, said he hoped the committee will take step to hold regular councils of the party’s associate bodies as those are not being held regularly. “I think if the associate bodies are strong, Awami League will get stronger,” he added.
The delegates and councillors said they are happy that the two-day council is being held at historic Suhrawardy Udyan.
They said the place is a historic place and the council of the Awami League always has a historical value and they feel proud of being part of the history.
Awami League sees the next committee very important as the party will contest the next election in 2019 as per constitution under the leadership of the committee.
The party also formed a three-member election commission led by AL advisory council member Yousuf Hossain Humayun to elect new leadership.
But in the past it was seen the leadership is formed not through election but through a consensus. Party leaders hinted that same system will be followed this time, too.
A total of 6,570 councillors and 6,570 delegates are taking part in the council.
