Habiganj: Four members of police were injured in an attack by miscreants as the Habiganj Sadar Model police officials conducted a drive in Habiganj for arresting a fugitive accused in the early hours of Monday.

The accused is Dipak Sarkar alias Saju, who is wanted in several cases including robbery charges.

The injured police members are Sub-inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman and Suman Hazra, Assistant Sub-inspector Akhter Hossain, and Constable Yasir. They were taken to Habiganj Sadar Hospital for primary treatment.

SI Mirzanur Rahman said police has recently started special drives to hold enlisted thieves, robbers, miscreants and other fugitives who are wanted in several cases as crime upsurges across Habiganj.

However, a team of Habiganj Sadar Model police cordoned off Dipak’s residence on Sunday night. At one stage, Dipak’s wife opened the door to police. Police wanted to arrest Dipak, but Dipak’s wife restrained them to arrest him. Later, Dipak and his wife involved in an argument with police members and stabbed SI Mizanur and ASI Akhter Hossain with sharp weapons at about 12:00midnight.

Being informed, a team of additional police led by SI Sumon Hazra and SI Abdur Rahman went to the spot. SI Sumon Hazra was also injured during attack.

However, police arrested Dipak but his wife ran away from the spot.

Dipak, who was also injured during the clash, is admitted to hospital under police custody.

The Habiganj Sadar Model police Officer-in-charge Yasinul Haque said Dipak is an enlisted top criminal, abductor, and extortionist. He was an absconding accused in several cases. Dipak and his associate attacked on police with local arms, when the law-enforcers went to his residence to conduct a drive.
