Benapole: A young man was reportedly killed in a gunfight between two criminal groups at Panchbaria in Sadar upazila of Jessore early on Thursday.

Identity of the deceased could not be confirmed.

Jessore Kotowali Police Officer-in-charge Mohammad Ilius Hossain said on information that a gunfight ensued between two criminal groups, a team of police conducted a drive in the area at about 1:00am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the members of both the groups fled away.

Later, police rescued the body of the young man, who is in his thirties, with bullet injuries at the head.

The injured was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where doctor declared him dead.

Police also recovered a one-shooter gun, one bullet and a bullet shell from the spot.
