Dhaka: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday alleged that the government is conspiring to restore ‘Pakistani flag’ by taking a move to remove the establishments made reshaping Louis I Kahn’s original design of parliament.

‘Pakistani dictator Ayub Khan had selected world famous architect Louis I Kahn to make the design of parliament building, secretariat and the then central governments’ establishments at his declared Ayub Nagar in Dhaka. The design had been made based on Pakistan’s flag,’ he said.

Speaking at a discussion, he further said, ‘Whose design are you now going to restore? Do you want to remove the establishments out of the design to protect the Pakistani flag? You must answer to this question of people.’

BNP arranged the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking ‘autocracy fall and democracy free day’ commemorating the fall of military ruler HM Ershad on December 6, 1990.

The Housing and Public Works Minister last year announced to remove eight graves, including that of BNP founder Zia, and some other establishments, set up in the parliament area reshaping the original design by Louis I Kahn.

Later, the government took an initiative to bring the original design from the USA. Louis I Kahn’s original design reached Dhaka on Thursday from the US’ Pennsylvania University.

Turing to the formation of Election Commission, Fakhrul hailed the President as he is going to hold dialogue with political parties after the Victory Day.

He said their party does not want an Election Commission like the current one which destroyed the country’s election system and democracy.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain urged the government not to set any bad example by removing Zia’s grave from parliament area.

He also warned that people will not sit idle if the government tries to relocate the grave.
