Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday voiced its strong opposition to Awami League’s proposal for making a law for constituting the Election Commission (EC) and introducing e-voting in the next general election.

Speaking at a discussion, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also warned that people will not accept the new EC if it is formed with the people of government choice by making a law, reports UNB.

‘Your (PM’s) parliament is unilateral one. If you formulate a law on your own choice and thus constitute the Election Commission, it won’t be acceptable to all parties. People have a doubt about the law you will make as your all laws are anti-people ones as those go in favour of plundering and corruption,’ he said.

The BNP leader further said, ‘Form a search committee based on all parties’ opinions which will constitute the Election Commission with acceptable individuals. No one will accept the Commission if it is formed with those in whom all parties have no confidence.’

Jagpa Chhatra League arranged the discussion at Photojournalists’ Association auditorium in the city marking its founding anniversary.

The ruling Awami League during its formal dialogue with the President on Wednesday proposed introducing e-voting system in the national election and enacting a law for the reconstitution of the EC.

The 19-member AL delegation, led by its President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, placed four proposals before President Abdul Hamid during the talks on formation of the new EC.

Opposing e-voting, Rizvi said if the system is introduced it will create a scope for the ruling party to resort to digital vote rigging.

He came down hard on the Prime Minister as she in her address to the nation said her government took Bangladesh on development highway, saying the country has been on corruption highway, not on development one.

Mentioning that around 1.1 crore educated youths remain unemployed, he questioned how the country is moving forward and witnessing huge economic development when so many people are jobless.

On Thursday evening, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation marking the 3rd anniversary of her present government’s tenure after winning the January 5 polls in 2014.

The BNP leader alleged the Prime Minister gave the nation false information about her government’s development activities. ‘There has been no development of people under your rule, rather only killing, enforced disappearance, corruption, plundering, terrorism and extortion rose in the country during the period.’

He also said ministers, MPs and ruling party leaders and their relatives made their fortunes by plundering public money.
