Jhalakati: Police arrested the son of Jhalakati municipal mayor Liakat Ali Talkudar from the district town on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and carrying firearms illegally.

Jhalakati Police Station Officer-in-charge Mahe Alam said mayor Liakat rebuked his son Aminul Islam Liton after he interfered with the activities of the mayoral office at Court road in the town on Tuesday evening.

At one stage, Liton became furious and opened fire from his unlicensed pistol at Liakat.

However, mayor Liakat escaped unhurt as the bullet missed its intended target.    

On information, a police team launched a drive at the business establishment of Liton in the town on Tuesday night and arrested him along with a pistol, 14 bullets and 2 magazines.   

Later, sub-inspector of Jhalaki Police Station M Kaiser filed a case with the police station at night.

Just before his arrest, Liton told news agency UNB that “I did not fire any shot but an altercation was created with my father in his office.”
