Underlining the importance of resolving the Rohingya crisis, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday again sought the support of the international community, including Britain, for relocating the illegal Myanmar citizens living in Bangladesh to a safe place.

The Prime Minister made the call when visiting British Minister for Asia and Pacific Alok Sharma, MP met her at her official residence Ganobhaban.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karin briefed reporters.

Sheikh Hasina informed Sharma that some four lakh documented and undocumented Myanmar nationals have been living in Bangladesh in an inhumane condition. ‘That’s why the government of Bangladesh has taken an initiative for their relocation to an environmentally sound zone,’ she said.

The government has recently taken a move to relocate the Myanmar nationals until necessary steps are taken to repatriate them to their country, she said, reports UNB.

The Prime Minister also urged the British government to withdraw its temporary embargo on cargo flight operation from Dhaka to the UK as it is causing immense sufferings to Bangladesh’s business community.

The British government in March last year imposed restrictions on cargo flights from Dhaka to the UK until further order on ground of security lapses.

Hasina termed the security lapses at the airport as a global phenomenon and said recently such lapses were also found in London Heathrow Airport.

Sheikh Hasina and the British Minister expressed satisfaction at the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, said the press secretary adding that they discussed many issues relating to mutual interests, particularly cooperation in the areas of airport security and infrastructure development.

The Prime Minister reiterated her government’s steadfast ‘zero tolerance’ stance against terrorism and said the government has already proved its sincere ability against the militants at Holy Artisan Bakery last year.

The British Minister said experts of the two countries would sit together to settle the issue of cargo flight resumption from Dhaka to the UK.

Prime Minister’s International Affairs advisor Dr Gowher Rizvi, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Britain Md Nazmul Quaunine and British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alison Blake were present.
