Dhaka: State Minister for Posts and Communications Tarana Halim on Thursday said the government will urge the Facebook authorities to open a desk that will monitor the impacts of different issues on Bangladesh.

“We’ll place such a demand at a meeting with the Facebook authorities to be held in Singapore on March 30,” she said while talking to reporters after a meeting with the high officials of the Home Ministry, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regularity Commission (BTRC) and law enforcers’ agency at the Secretariat.

It is one of the reasons behind the spread of fundamentalism and militancy by using social networking sites, said the junior minister, adding that they will discuss with the authorities over the issues during the meeting.

Tarana said the Facebook authorities accepted 6.47 percent out of 64 complaints lodged by the government in 2014 and 2015 while 114 allegations out of 203 in 2015 and 2016, and 36 out of 46 ones till March this year.

Responding to a question about the patterns of complaints, she said they made more complaints over violence against women, religious incitement and militancy.
