Sheikh Hasina’s India tour unproductive: Khaleda Zia
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday described Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's recent India visit as a 'failed one of giving and not getting anything' saying she returned home with empty-handed.
"The country's people think the tour is a failed one of only giving and not getting anything. The prime minister returned home empty-handed as she was given only assurances," she said.
The BNP chief was addressing a press conference at her Gulshan office in the afternoon.
The news conference was arranged to brief the media on Bangladesh's latest political situation and the prime minister's recent India tour.
Khaleda Zia claimed the prime minister herself admitted at her press conference on Tuesday that she went to New Delhi not to seek anything. "She said she had been there to get friendship and she got it," Khaleda Zia said.
She also said the country's people will judge what this 'gaseous' friendship is.
The BNP chief said Sheikh Hasina admitted indirectly through her speech that she brought nothing from India for the country's people. "Instead, she gave everything to India as per its demand," she said.
Khaleda also observed that all the deals and MoUs were signed during the Prime Minister's tour with focus only on India's interests and proposals.
She alleged Hasina's tour could not yield any positive outcome for resolving outstanding problems like Teesta water sharing, Ganges Barrage project, border killing and tariff and nontariff barriers to Bangladeshi export items.
"Despite people's demand, the Prime Minister didn't say anything about changing the site of Rampal power plant which is threatening the Sundarbans and environment," she said.
The BNP chief alleged that no deal and MoU has been signed with India protecting the national interests. "They're only repaying the loan of their gratitude to India, sacrificing national interests and dignity, and putting the country's sovereignty at stake."
She also said though the Prime Minister is happy with the tour outcome, the country's people are not only unhappy, but also worried over it. They didn't want so many anti-national deals and MoUs as they only wanted to realise their dues."
Khaleda Zia said though her party has conflict and differences of opinions with the ruling party over many issues, BNP is in favour of a common stance on protecting national interests, dignity, Independence, sovereignty and national security. "Had Sheikh Hasina played a strong role in uphold those matters, we could have unequivocally supported her. Unfortunately, she has totally failed to do that."
The BNP chief voiced concern over the defence MoUs signed with India saying the Prime Minister has made Bangladesh a part of Indi's military plan thought it.
Khaleda said the government has signed defence MoUs ignoring public opinion and the oppositions by the political parties. "We're worried like people that there could have a long-term negative impact on it."
Replying to a question, she said her party will review all the anti-state deals and MoUs if it is voted to power.
As her attention was drawn to the PM's remark that BNP had also signed such a deal with China, Khaleda said, they did not sign the deal with China sacrificing the country's interests. "Before inking the deal, we had talked to the army and taken their opinion."
Asked whether BNP will wage any movement to protest of the agreements and MoUs, Khaleda said her press conference is also part of protest against it. "We'll continue to mobilise public support against those. "The way the present government is running the country, people must wake up some day, and then we'll take to the streets with them, and will continue our movement."
Replying to another question, Khaleda Zia said BNP always speaks in favour of the country's interest and protests if any anti-sate treaty is signed. "We oppose any anti-state deal with any country, not only with India."
