Journalist held for sharing news over death of goat on Facebook
Khulna: A journalist was arrested in Khulna’s Dumuria upazila for sharing a news story which covers death of a goat which was distributed by the state minister of Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda.
The arrestee is Abdul Latif Morol, upazila correspondent of a daily newspaper Dainik Probaho, which is published from the Khulna city.
Abdul Latif was arrested from his residence at Sadar upazila in Dumuria in the early hours of Tuesday.
Earlier, a case was filed against the reporter under section 57 of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) act.
The Dumuria police Officer-in-charge (OC) Shukumar Biswas said a man, named Shubrata Fouzder, filed the case against Abdul Latif Morol under section 57 on Monday night.
The OC said Abdul Latif shared a news story published by a prominent online portal on 30 July, which titled ‘State Minister distributed goat on morning, goat died in night.’ Latif also posted a picture of state minister and offensive comments.
The Dumuria police arrested the journalist after filing a defamation case on Monday night as he posted objectionable comment, added the police official.
The OC said also said, the plaintiff and defendant are both journalists of a local daily published from Jessore.
However, local people claimed the plaintiff is not a journalist. He is a follower of State Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda, who was elected for Khulna constituency-5.
