Parliament to pass 16th amendment again: Muhith

Sylhet: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Friday said Parliament will amend the Constitution empowering it to remove the Supreme Court judges every time the judiciary cancels the amendment.
"The 16th amendment to the Constitution will be passed in Jatiya Sangsad every time the judiciary cancels it. Parliament enjoys the right to pass any amendment as it's the legislative assembly and its position is above everything," he said.
The veteran minister was talking to reporters during a visit to the site of Sylhet Medical University in Dakkhan Surma upazila.
Mentioning that the Constitution, which was achieved through the Liberation War, gives Parliament the amendment right, he said, "The military government had curtailed the right but the Jatiya Sangsad restored it."
Noting that the government appoints the judges, Muhith said but they try to have upper hand over public representatives. "This mentality of the judges is not right."
On 3 July, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court verdict that declared illegal the 16th amendment empowering the parliament to remove the judges of the Supreme Court.
