Cop dies to save man’s life

Bhairab: A police constable died after he was stabbed by a mugger to save a young man at Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj on Sunday night.

Another man was also injured during the incident.

The deceased is Arifur Rahman, in his twenties, a constable of Bhairab Bridge police post, also a resident of Khagdohor area of Mymensingh city.

The injured is Dalim, around 23 years old, supervisor of Ena Paribahan. He was taken to Jahirul Islam Medical College at Bajitpur. Dalim is a resident of the village of Rakhongaon at Bajitpur.

Local people and police said Dalim was crossing under Syed Nazrul Islam Road Bridge in Bhairab at about 8:30pm on Sunday, when muggers stabbed him. Police constable Arif came to the spot as Dalim cried for help. The muggers also stabbed Arif and left him critically injured.

Later, local people recovered them and took to a local private hospital. They were shifted to Upazila Health Complex as their condition deteriorated. Doctors declared Asif dead at the health complex, and sent Dalim to Jahirul Islam Medical College.

The Bhairab Upazila Health Complex resident medical officer (RMO) K MN Jahangir said two stab wounds have been found on the chest of the police member. He died of excessive bleeding, while wound marks found on Dalim’s head and shoulder.

The Bhairab police Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman said Arif was appointed on the Railway Bridge. He died as he went to rescue Dalim from the muggers. Being informed, we went to the hospital and brought the body to police station. The body was sent to District Police Line on Sunday.

After the incident, police is conducting drive to held several muggers group, said the OC.
