Murder case accused killed in ‘gunfight’

Kushtia: Accused in a murder case was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased, Anwar Hossain, was an enlisted accused in a case filed over the killing of expatriate Raqibul.

Police claimed the gunfight took place near the bank of River Gorai at Joynabaj area of the upazila at about 3:00am. Four members of police were also injured during the shootout.

The law enforcers claimed to recover a foreign pistol, two bullets, a sword, and a machete from the spot.

The Kumarkhali police Officer-in-charge (OC) Abdul Khaleq said police arrested Anwar Hossain from Bandbazar area on Thursday afternoon.

Anwar Hossain is resident of the village of Shaota in the upazila. Police said Anwar was wanted in several cases including murder and robbery.

During interrogation, Anwar confessed about his link with Raqibul murder and told police that other accused of the murder case were hidden at Joynabaj area.

Later, the OC said, police went to the spot near the River Gorain along with Anwar to conduct a drive. Sensing the presence of police, a gang of miscreants opened fire to police, and police also fired back.

At one stage, the miscreants stepped back and Anwar received a bullet, Police recovered him and took him to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctor declared him dead.

The OC said Kumarkhali police sub-inspector (SI) Rajib Al Rashid, assistant SI Jihad Ali, and constable Porag Bulbul and Firoz Hossain were injured during the drive.
