Jhenidah: The half-day hartal, enforced by Shailkupa BNP unit protesting at the eight-year jail terms against former lawmaker M A Wahab from Jhenidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency in a graft case, is underway here on Tuesday.

During the hartal, a good number of law enforcers were seen deployed at key places in the upazila to avoid any untoward incident.

However, no picketing was seen till filing of this report at 11:15 am.

Earlier on Monday, a special court sentenced Wahab to eight years’ imprisonment in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for concealing information in wealth report and amassing illegal wealth.

The court also fined him Tk 45,000 and ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate his wealth worth Tk 96 lakh.

According to the court statement, the ACC on November 11, 2008, filed the case against Wahab for concealing wealth information and amassing wealth illegally under section 26 (2) and section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act-2008.
