Former CCC Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury passes away

Chittagong: Former Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor and city Awami League President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury passed away in the early hours of Friday. He was 73.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury breathed his last undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chittagong at about 4:30am, confirmed his elder son Muhibul Hassan Chowdhury Naofel, who is also the organising secretary of Awami League.
Muhibul Hassan Chowdhury said his father was taken to Max Hospital on Thursday evening.
However, later he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital around 10:00pm and put on life support, said his son-in-law Dr Selim Jahangir, also head of the CCC Health Department.
Earlier, on 12 November, Mohiuddin, who has long been suffering from kidney and heart diseases, was admitted to the ICU of the same hospital after he fell ill. Later he was airlifted to Dhaka’s Square Hospital.
His namaz-e-Janaza will be held after Asr prayers on Friday at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong city. He will be buried at his family graveyard at Chashma Hill in the city’s Sholoshahar area.
Born on December 1, 1944 at Gohira village in Raojan upazila of Chittagong district, Mohiuddin Chowdhury got involved in politics of Chhatra League in his school life.
He was elected Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation first in 1994, while for the second time in 2000 and for the third consecutive time in 2005.
He was the President of Chittagong City Awami League until his death.
