Chittagong: Within hours after taking the onus of investigation, members of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested two accused on Tuesday in a case filed for raping four women of a family during a burglary in Karnaphuli area of the port city on December 12.

The arrestees are Abu Sama, 32, and Mizan Matabbar, 45.

M Moin Uddin, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong city) of PBI, said five people, including the duo, were involved in the incident. ‘Abu Sama is the mastermind of the incident and he is the only local while rests of the culprits are outsiders,’ he said.

After arresting the duo, PBI personnel produced Mizan before the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Al Imran where he gave a confessional statement, Moin added.

Earlier, police arrested three people over the incident although they were not involved in it, said the additional police super.

On Monday, police at a press conference expressed their partial failure in investigating the incident properly.

Later, the case was transferred to PBI on Tuesday morning for probing the incident.

On December 12, a gang of robbers allegedly raped the four women after committing burglary in a house at Karnaphuli.

The robbers took away 11 tolas of gold, valuables and five mobile phone sets before leaving the house. No male members of the family were present during the incident.

The following day, when the victim's family members went to Karnaphuli Police Station to file a case, the law enforcers sent them to Patia Police Station.

However, Patia Police Station did not record the case too and redirected them to the Karnaphuli Police Station.

Five days after the incident, Karnaphuli Police Station recorded a case following interference of State Minister for Land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, also the local MP.

The four victims were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital the following day for medical test.
