Suspected robber killed in Kushtia ‘shootout’

Kushtia: A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Kushtia Islami University police station area. Police claimed the deceased is member of a robber gang.

However, identities of the deceased could not be known yet.

The gunfight took place at Ujangram union on the Mohishdanga Highway of Kustia at about 3:00am on Thursday.

Kushtia Islami University Police Officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Ratan Sheikh said being tipped of that a gang of robbers is taking preparation to conduct robbery by tying rope with a tree on the Mohishdanga Highway, police went to the spot. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to police, police also fired back. At one stage, the robbers walked back.

During the gunfight, an unidentified robber received bullet. Later, he was taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The Islami University police sub-inspector (SI) Mohammad Rashedul Islam, Constable Mohammad Ahadul Islam were also injured in the gunfight.

Police also recovered a pistol, a gun, a saw, and a thick rope from the spot.
