Chattogram: A court here on Thursday granted bail to former general secretary of Chittagong city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Nurul Azim Rony in an extortion case.

Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate court Judge Shafi Uddin passed the order after Roni signed a Tk 1000-bond.

The court granted him the bail on condition of appearing before the court on every Thursday until submission of report in the extortion case, said Roni’s lawyer Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury.

On Monday, the court sent Roni to jail rejecting his petition for extending bail.

Jahed Khan, principal of Chittagong Science College, filed the case with Chawk Bazar police station accusing Nurul Azim Rony and his followers for demanding extortion and assaulting him on April 6.

Jahed Khan was allegedly assaulted by Nurul Azim Rony on March 31 at Chittagong Science College in Chawkbazar area.

The incident came to light after CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media.

Rony allegedly assaulted the college principal for ‘realising extra money from HSC examinees’.

After a few days, Roni ‘tortured’ a coaching centre owner Md Rashed Mia for extortion in Panchalaish area in Chattogram while a video footage of the incident collected from a CCTV camera went viral on social media Facebook.
