Sherpur: Ten people including three policemen were injured in a clash between two local rival groups of Awami League over formation of a madrasah committee on Saturday in the town’s Munshibazar area.

Headmaster of the Jamia Siddiqia Terabazar Madrasah, Maulana Siddiqur Rahman said that the scuffle took place during the madrasah’s triennial general meeting, which eventually has to be suspended later, reports the UNB.

Locals and witnesses said that the scuffle took place over conflict regarding the madrasah’s new committee formation.

The existing committee, led by local Awami League leader Abdul Wadud, who invited the party’s local organising secretary Humayun Kabir Ruman to the programme.

A rival group, allegedly led by supporters of district AL president and a whip of Jatiya Sangsad Atiur Rahman Atik, was also present, leading to a tense situation.

The situation escalated when members of the two sides engaged in a fight with sticks and throwing brickbats at each other.

After police intervened by firing rubber bullets and tear shells at the activists, ten people got injured and sent to Sherpur Zilla Hospital.

Additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle) Aminul Islam confirmed the incident, but could not say the actual number of those injured.
