PM unwilling to see her name on Padma Bridge: Quader
Dhaka: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has turned down a proposal to name the much-hyped Padma Bridge Multipurpose Bridge after her name.
He came up with the information while talking to reporters after visiting minor boy Likhon, who has been suffering from a rare disease, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), reports the UNB.
The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry earlier sent the proposal to the Prime Minister to name the bridge ‘Sheikh Hasina Padma Bridge’ but she rejected it, said Quader.
He said it is the Prime Minister who took on the challenge to construct the Padma Bridge with own fund without taking money from the World Bank. “So, people of all walks of life were demanding that the bridge be named after her name,” he said.
The minister said Sheikh Hasina does want the bridge to be named after any member of the Bangabandhu family and she has decided to name the bridge after the river.
Earlier on September 29, he said the Padma Bridge will be named after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, Quader, also Awami League general secretary, took the responsibility for the treatment of the ailing boy.
