Barishal: Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla has wished peace, prosperity, joy and happiness for people of Bangladesh and India ahead of Durga Puja.

‘Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina says ‘Dharmo Jar Jar, Utsob Sabar’. We all celebrate our festival together,’ said the High Commissioner while addressing a function at Tara Bari Shaktipeeth in Wazirpur upazila on Sunday, reports the UNB.

This Shaktipeeth is one of the ancient temples in Barishal Division. Devotees from India also come here to offer their prayers.

‘Puja festival is not far. I wish you, your family, friends and relatives a very happy puja festival,’ said the High Commissioner.

Attending another function at Sher-e-Bangla Foundation in the district, Shringla said that Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq (1873-1962) was a very popular mass leader of his time.

As the general secretary of Indian National Congress from 1916 to 1918, he worked closely with many Indian leaders during the freedom struggle of India.

In protest against colonialism, he gave up all titles and knighthood granted by the British government. Instead, he was popularly known as Sher-e-Bangla (Tiger of Bengal).

‘A highly educated man himself and a successful lawyer, Sher-e-Bangla was very greatly concerned with the task of providing educational opportunities for all,’ said the High Commissioner.

The High Commissioner said his (Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq) love for the people guided him to take several initiatives for the socio-economic development of this region, adding ‘His legacy of political and development work will continue to inspire the coming generations.’

Advocate Talukder Md Yunus, MP, and Chairman of Sher-e-Bangla Foundation AK Faiyazul Huq Raju, among others, were present.
