Two suspected criminals were killed in reported gunfights with police  in Joypurhat and Mymensingh districts early Friday.

In Mymensingh, Abdul Motaleb, 42, member of an inter-district robber gang and son of Kotu Sheikh of the upazila, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with DB police at Rasulpur in Gafargaon upazila, the UNB reported.

Police said he was wanted in seven robbery cases.

Tipped off that a group of robbers were preparing to commit robbery, a team DB police conducted a drive in the area around 12:30 am, said Shah Kamal Akond, officer-in-charge of DB police.

As police confronted the criminals, they opened fire on police fearing danger which prompted police to take action that triggered  the ‘gunfight’, leaving Motaleb injured.

Later, he was taken to local hospital where doctors declared him dead.

One pipegun, 15 cartridges, 20 shells of bullets were recovered from the spot.

In Joypurhat, a suspected criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bhutgari village in Panchbibi upazila.

Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area where a gang of kidnappers gathered early in the morning.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered  the gunfight.
