Over eight crore SIM cards registered: Tarana

Narayanganj: State minister for Posts and Telecommunication Tarana Halim on Friday said over eight crore mobile phone SIM cards have been registered so far with biometric details.
‘Mobile phone operators should be more conscious regarding SIM registration process to avoid any sort of sufferings of the people,’ she told reporters at Kandapara Govt Primary School at Tarabo Pourasabha in Narayanganj.
Local Lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi, representatives of local government bodies and officials, among others, were present on the occasion.
Tarana said the government launched the campaign of re-registering SIMs/RIUMs under the biometric system on 16 December last to ensure the actual ownership of cellphone connection.
Some 1.21 crore SIMs could not be registered for various reasons, including fingerprint mismatch with NID database, she added.
As the biometric SIM verification will be ended at 10:00pm on 30 April, the people, who are yet to verify their SIMs, should register within the scheduled time, the state minister added.
