Bangladesh break 16-year win drought
Finally the 16-year long jinx come to an end as Tigers recorded a 79-run victory over visiting Pakistan in the high scoring first ODI to take 1-0 lead in Dan Cake three-match ODI series held on Friday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur, Dhaka.
Chasing a massive winning target of 330 runs set by Bangladesh, Pakistan found the chase very stiff losing wickets in regular intervals and finally dismissed at 250 runs.
Thanks to Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim for their impressive batting display that helped the Tigers to most the deserving victory against Pakistan for the second time in ODI format after 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup in England.
Although the two Pakistani openers - Azhar Ali (72) and Sharfaz Ahmed (24) - made a cautious start contributing 53 runs for the opening stand before Pakistan lost their first wicket of Sarfraz Ahmed off Arafat Sunny's
delivery.
One down Mohammad Hafeez followed the footprint of Sarfraz (4) as he fall victim of run out leaving Pakistan trouble.
Skipper Azhar Ali then again paired another useful partnership of 89-run with Haris Sohail for the third wicket stand before Taskin Ahmed struck on Pakistani innings by dismissing Azhar Ali, who smashed seven boundaries off 73-ball.
Mohammad Rizwan (67), the last hope of Pakistan, hardly fins any support from other end to continue the marathon chase as he was caught by Nasir Hossain off pacer Rubel Hossain's delivery. He cracked eight boundaries off 58-ball.
Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny were the most successful bowlers for
Bangladesh picking up 42 and 47 runs respectively.
Mushfiqur Rahim of Bangladesh was named the player of the match for his impressive hundred in the match.
Earlier, an imperious centuries by opener Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim steered Bangladesh to post their highest ODI total of 329 for 6 in 50 overs against visiting Pakistan.
The left handed batsman Tamim dropped from a chance by Saad Nasim on 48, otherwise played within himself and gave few chances in his 135-ball innings.
The whole crowds, who came in the jump-packed stadium on public holiday, had cheered about after Tigers won the important toss and chose to bat, Tamim brushing off his recent poor one-day form with a superb knock of 132-run.
He received an ample support from Mushfiqur Rahim in the other end to set at their new highest ODI total in front of Pakistan. Earlier, Bangladesh's previous highest total was 326 against the same opponents made last year at the same venue.
Mahmudullah (5), who was promoted to first down, was trapped leg before wicket off Rahat Ali's delivery and that brought Mushfiqur Rahim to join Tamim Iqbal on the crease and the pair set about ruthlessly snatching the momentum away from the Pakistanis with a dominant partnership of 178-run for the third wicket stand.
They were separated when Tamim was caught by Mohammad Rizwan off Wahab Riaz delivery before he smashed 15 boundaries and three over boundaries during his 135-ball stay on the wicket.
All rounder Shakib Al Hasan (31) came in to join Mushfiq but there was no let up in the pace of Bangladesh scoring with the left-hander bludgeoned four eye-catching boundaries during his 27-ball innings.
Wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim before dropped by Junaid Khan at mid-on on his 35, continued his onslaught after getting his second life punishing the strong Pakistanis blowing attacks all square of the field. His dominating 106-run featuring 13 fours and two sixes was halted by Wahab Riaz's delivery.
Wahab Riaz, the most successful bowlers for Pakistan with 4 for 59 runs, helped wrest back some momentum for Pakistan, securing his remaining two wickets among the four wickets haul as Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman.
The second day/night ODI between the two sides will be played on Sunday (19 April) at the same venue.
