Severe heat wave grips India: 335 dies

New Delhi: A large part of India is in the grip of a severe heat wave which claimed 335 lives during the last few days. The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) urged people in the affected areas to take precautions when going outdoors.
Heat wave and severe heat wave conditions would prevail at many places in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Telangana, a weather bulletin issued by the IMD on Saturday said.
The weather department declared a heat wave condition in Delhi. Highest temperature in Telgengana was 48 degree celcius yesterday while it was 47 Degree in Allahabad. In Jaipur temperature was 45 degree Celcius and in Delhi 45.5 degree Celsius.
Heat wave related death gone up to 335 during last few days across India. In the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the heat was even more brutal, killing 135 people on Saturday. While 100 died in Andhra, the toll was 130 in Telangana as temperatures were five to seven degrees above normal.
Indian capital Delhi is also is in the grip of heat wave for last seven days. According to met office it will remain for another week.
Highest temperature recorded at Safadargang 44.5 degree Celsius. It is five degree above normal.
The Andhra and Telengana states rescheduled ongoing government schemes like NREGS as the majority of those who died of sunstroke were labourers. At 48 degrees, Khammam in Telangana broke its previous record of 47.2 set in 1947.
The met department has warned that it's going to get hotter. According to IMD, Delhi, temperatures are rising in central, north-west, parts of east and peninsular India for the last few days.
Heat wave conditions will continue in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Jharkhand for the next couple of week. This year's summer is expected to be particularly difficult for states that see high temperatures, with experts expecting a weaker monsoon due to the El Nino phenomenon.
An El Nino, a weather anomaly that leads to warming of sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific, often has a far-reaching impact not only in terms of public health but also has impact on the country's agricultural output.
