India, Bangladesh to seal Teesta water deal soon

Dhaka: Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the Teesta water sharing agreement between India and Bangladesh will soon get the approval of both countries, reports Inidan Media.
‘India, Bangladesh will soon approve Teesta water sharing deal. We hope to get full cooperation from West Bengal government,’ said the Home Minister.
Ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Bangladesh, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar had said that the matter is under discussion.
Earlier, the Teesta treaty was postponed in 2011 after objections by West bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Teesta water is crucial for Bangladesh, especially in the leanest period from December to March when the water flow often temporarily comes down to less than 1,000 cusecs from 5,000 cusecs every year, reports Zee News.
