Viral pictures show spider battling venomous snake
Pictures of a deadly battle between a redback spider and venomous eastern brown snake have gone viral on social media after it was shared on Facebook by Robyn McLennan.
The high-resolution pictures were taken last week at a winery in Victoria, Australia and posted to a Facebook group of Field Naturalists Club of Victoria, reports the timesnownews.com.
However, the series of photos by McLennan reveals a surprising outcome of the battle between the arachnid and the reptile. Believe it or not, the redback spider emerged as the unlikely winner after it managed to trap the huge snake in its web.
McLennan shared details of the battle on his Facebook post which has left many netizens stunned.
‘The spider has now brought the entire snake off the ground and it is [suspended] mid-air, just under the lower lip of the tank,’ McLennan wrote on Facebook.
The pictures have now been shared by 807 users on Facebook. It has also received close to 1,200 reactions.
One user wrote, ‘It must have woven that main silk strand many times to make it so thick. I can’t imagine the process or reason for this as the snake would have needed to be paralysed already.’
‘That totally needs a time-lapse sequence of what happens next,’ wrote another user.
The spider’s hunt has bemused many netizens because the eastern brown snake is considered as one of the most dangerous serpents in the world.
However, redback spiders have the ability to kill their prey by injecting a venom called alpha-latrotoxin.
Pictures of the deadly battle were later shared by Brisbane Snake Catchers on Facebook. They said such battles are a ‘fairly common occurrence’ that is not often witnessed by the public.
