Save Sundarbans March ends in Bagerhat
Bagerhat: The ‘Save Sundarbans March’ which was launched by Ganatantrik Bam Morcha on 13 October aiming to raise awareness against all environmentally destructive activities in the world's largest mangrove forest ended here on Sunday.
The three-day road march ended through a rally in Katakhali area at about 7:00pm.
The alliance announced 5 November as the ‘Sundarbans Protection Solidarity Day’ from the rally.
It also demanded cancellation of the two coal-fired power plants in Rampal and Mongla.
The combine announced to observe a demonstration on October 20 in protest against the attack on the alliance members by law enforcers.
The march of the protesters which started with a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on 13 October reached Bagerhat district on Sunday via Manikganj, Faridpur, Jhenidah, Jessore and Khulna districts.
The protesters said the government's move to set up coal-fired power plant and Orion Group’s power stations near the Sundarbans will affect the mangrove forest destroying its environment, ecosystem and biodiversity. Besides, people who have been residing in the area will be affected by different diseases, including cancer.
The people of the country do not want the coal-fired power plants and the government has no right to implement these projects without their consent, they said.
CPB has taken various preparations, including street meeting, leaflet distribution and campaigning in different educational institutions in the district to make their programme a success, said Farrukh Hasan Jewel, general secretary of Bagerhat unit CPB.
Besides, they will announce a greater movement from the rally scheduled to be held on Saturday, he said.
The proposed 1320-megawatt Rampal power plant project, on an area of over 1834 acres of land, is situated 14 kilometres north of the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans, which is a UNESCO world heritage site.
